Author Solutions finds itself in hot water once again as three
authors have filed suit against them and its parent company Penguin., Why are they suing? Here is the quote: “Defendants have marketed themselves as an independent publisher with a reputation for outstanding quality and impressive book sales. Instead, Defendants are not an independent publisher, but a print-on-demand vanity press.”
The authors are saying Author Solutions pulled them in with promises of being able to publish high quality books at a quick pace. They are also claiming that Author Solutions promised their books would compete with traditionally published books and they’d be able to earn high royalties. The complaint continues to go on and say that Author Solutions will then profit from “fraudulent” practices including “delaying publication, publishing manuscripts with errors to generate fees, and selling worthless services, or services that fail to accomplish what they promise.” The suit also alleges that Author Solutions fails to pay its authors the royalties they are due.
Author Solutions seems to be getting sued about once a week at this point and I agree, they use some sleazy practices as a company. There is no way around that fact, but for authors that continue to use them and then point all the blame at Author Solutions for duping them. These authors need to point some of this blame on themselves, because a simple Google search will bring up countless articles about Author Solutions being a scam. It’s becoming similar to when people sue McDonald’s because the food made them fat.
With so many publishing options available to authors and resources to learn more about each option, an author can easily do some research. I talk to authors everyday that do their research and quite frankly, they move through the self-publishing process efficiently and have a game plan in place for when their book becomes available. If someone is promising a fantastic looking book that will undoubtedly result in sales and you can do this on a shoestring budget, this should give you pause.
This is why, even though Author Solutions is scam, authors are responsible for doing their own research. No one forced these authors to buy Author Solutions marketing services. I get asked everyday to email an author some of the other books I’ve worked on and I’m more than happy to oblige, because I want an author to know what they are signing up for before they sign up. So authors do your research and you won’t be stuck with self-publishers like Author Solutions.
